A 1930s family home opened up around one long, warm living room: lime plaster walls, smoked oak joinery and a travertine hearth.

The brief
A family of five wanted one room where everyone could be together, apart.
The original house was a warren of small rooms facing the wrong way. We took down two walls, moved the fireplace to the long wall and drew a continuous run of oak joinery that holds books, the television, firewood and a window seat.
The palette stays deliberately narrow: lime plaster, smoked oak, honed travertine and natural linen. Light is layered in three levels so the room works for Saturday breakfast and Sunday films alike.
